My fiancee and I started our welding hat business
in 2002. We both have always dreamed of owning our
own business and becoming successful.
I am a member of Local 440 Plumbers and Steamfitters
Union out of Indianapolis. In the beginning of my
career, at the age of eighteen, I was introduced to
my first welding hats while on the job working at
Eli Lillies Pharmaceuticals . The journeyman I was
assigned to was selling welding hats to other welders
and construction workers. I had bought several welding
hats from him. These hats are a symbol of my trade,
and it also makes wearing a hard hat much more comfortable.
After years gone by, my hats were finally starting
to wear out. This was about the time I met my fiancee
and we started dating.
One
day out of the blue she told me my hats were old, and
raggedy. She said that she could sew me a better hat
than the ones I was wearing, if she had sewing machine.
The very next day, Donna and I went out shopping for
a sewing machine. Once she had made me a few hats, I
was so impressed by her ability that I asked her if
she would be interested in starting a business.
Donna became very enthusiastic about the idea, and from
there we began our journey. I started selling her hats
on the jobsites that I was working on, and the men loved
them. Donna and I knew at this point that the product
we were making was a good selling product in high demand
by how many hats were selling. Not only was I selling
her hats, but I was also asking all the welders what
they liked and disliked about our welding hats. We had
several men give us ideas on how we could improve our
product. These ideas were then passed on to Donna. From
there we improved our hats accordingly and this is how
we have become known for having the top of the line
welding hats in Indianapolis. Our company has became
the leader in welding hats to my fellow brothers and
sisters in my local, and all other construction trades
as well.
